Pre Mixed Mortar/Plaster - Medium

How is non hydraulic lime plaster/mortar made?

Our non hydraulic medium stuff lime plaster is made on site using our CHALK LIME PUTTY and a blend of NEWBURY GRIT SAND and WAREHAM WASHED SAND. It is supplied as a ready mix, meaning it is easy to use straight from the bag or tub.  Available in chalk white or oatmeal.

  • Easy to use straight from the tub.
  • Ideal for second coats of internal lime plasters.
  • It can also be used for the final coat if a more textured look is required.
  • Excellent as an exterior lime render or as a mortar for thin joints
  • Available in 25kg bags or 25kg tubs. Or for larger orders, choose a half tonne bag, a tonne bag or a full pallet of 25kg bags.

What is non hydraulic lime?

Non hydraulic lime is lime in its purest form. It sets in contact with air through a process of carbonation. The slow setting process means non hydraulic lime remains softer and more breathable. It is good for internal plasterwork and for use on soft backgrounds such as cob, soft stone or friable material. Adding hair to the mix adds extra tensile strength to the plaster. This is particularly important if you are using it for lath plastering as the plaster doesn't adhere well to the timber once dried. See our LATH AND PLASTERING user guide for more information.

Applying non hydraulic lime

Lime putty plaster has a long shelf life if kept within the airtight containers. However, haired lime putty plaster needs to be used straight away as the alkalinity of the lime attacks the protein in the hair causing it dissolve over a period of time.

It is important that there is no risk of frost when applying non hydraulic lime mortars. Ice crystals forming within the lime mortar will greatly increase the time it will take the carbonisation process to take place. Using HESSIAN as an insulation barrier will protect from frost action and is vital during the winter months.

As a Backing Coat of Plaster

1 tonne will plaster 48m sq @ 10mm thickness. A 25kg tub/bag will cover 1.2m sq @ 10mm

As a Finish Coat of Plaster

1 tonne will plaster 120m sq @ 3mm thickness. A 25kg tub/bag will cover 2.5 - 3.5m sq @ 3mm

For Pointing

1 tonne will point 100 - 120m sq of stonework. A 25kg tub/bag will point 4m sq in standard joints.

For Laying Bricks

1 tonne will lay approximately 900 bricks.

    First rate finish

Posted by Dave on 20th Jun 2017

Been living in an old house for a long time now but I'm still a novice when it comes to working with lime, never quite get the mix right and end up with more on th floor than the wall. With medium stuff I now have the confidence to tackle other repairs knowing I'll get a first rate finish every time. Only wish I'd have found it sooner.

in the past with mixing up lime based mortar, plaster or render slaking and waiting for the product to mature has always been the issue along with where to keep it while it is doing so.
but with Lime stuff we dont have to worry about this again,

I needed to make an awkward ceiling repair, where an NHL Wareham mix didn't have the right consistency to bond overhead. The medium stuff was perfect

I used it for re- pointing an exposed brick wall in my cottage. The putty is lovely to use complementing the brickwork. The service was also good.

  8. Excellent plaster - David, 20th Dec 2016

    Excellent plaster

Posted by David on 20th Dec 2016

So far I have only applied a backing coat to stonework, a few days ago. I hope to apply the finish coat tomorrow. I have always mixed my own lime based plaster before. I wish I hadn't bothered; this stuff is just perfect, easy and pleasant to apply and a beautiful consistency. All it needs is a good stir up before use if it has been standing for a while, as mine had. Top notch!

    Excelllent Product

Posted by Paul @Remserv Group on 15th Nov 2016

Using on a historic library project The outcome of the finished rendering is of the best quality and although this needs to be undertaken by professionals I have asked our plastering operatives what they had thought and the response was extremely positive. They have used pre-blended products in the past and have identified the time saving and immediate use has put us in front of the work programme and has been easy to work with.
    Would highly recommend.

  10. Easy - Chris, 1st Nov 2016

I'm an amateur but this stuff is easy to work with - no messing about, already mixed, convenient bucket sizes.
Just make sure you wear gloves - it's unkind to the skin, especially for soft office boys like me!
    Excellent service too.
