Our non hydraulic medium stuff lime plaster is made at our warehouse using traditional hot lime methods. It is allowed to cool and supplied as a wet mix in a chalk white colour.

  • Easy to use straight from the bag or tub.
  • Ideal for second coats of internal lime plasters.
  • It can also be used for the final coat if a more textured look is required.
  • Excellent as an exterior lime render or as a mortar for thin joints
  • A 25kg bag will cover 1.2m sq @ 10mm as a plaster.
  • Available in 25kg bags or 10kg tubs. Or for larger orders, choose a full pallet of 25kg bags for the best bulk price.

What is non hydraulic lime?

Non hydraulic lime is lime in its purest form. It sets in contact with air through a process of carbonation. The slow setting process means non hydraulic lime remains softer and more breathable. It is good for internal plasterwork and for use on soft backgrounds such as cob, soft stone or friable material. Adding hair or fibres to the mix adds extra tensile strength to the plaster. This is particularly important if you are using it for lath plastering as the plaster doesn't adhere well to the timber once dried. See our LATH AND PLASTERING user guide for more information.

Wood Pulp Fibres

We also now have the option of a ready mixed plaster made with the addition of fully biodegradable wood pulp fibres. Wood pulp fibres work in the same way as the addition of horse hair in adding extra strength to the mix. However, they have the advantage of being cheaper and much easier to add to the mix.

Applying non hydraulic lime

Non hydraulic lime plasters are the most breathable and flexible of all plasters. They will absorb any movement which naturally occurs in solid walls or timber framed buildings without cracking. They are not suitable for application onto gyspum plasters or previously painted surfaces due to the differences in flexibility.

Lime plaster is generally applied as a three coat system; a base coat (scratch coat), a second coat (float coat) and an interal top coat. It is applied in thin layers of up to 12mm thicknesses to avoid shrinkage or cracking. Always ensure that the wall is dampened down before plastering to reduce suction.

Non hydraulic lime plasters cure through a process of carbonisation which can take place over a period of several months. As a rule of thumb, allow a day per mm drying time, so for a 10mm coat allow 10 days before applying the next coat.

Hot lime plasters have a long shelf life if kept within the airtight packaging. However, haired or fibred plaster needs to be used straight away as the alkalinity of the lime attacks the protein in the hair causing it dissolve over a period of time.
