How is non hydraulic lime mortar made?

Our non hydraulic medium stuff lime mortar is made at our warehouse using traditional hot lime methods. It is supplied as a ready mix, meaning it is easy to use straight from the bag.  Available in chalk white, chalk white with black grit, oatmeal and our new colour Abbey.

*Please note our Oatmeal mix uses a new blend of sands which is different from our Oatmeal mixes produced prior to 2020. There will therefore be a slight colour variation.

What is non hydraulic lime?

Non hydraulic lime is lime in its purest form. It sets in contact with air through a process of carbonation. The slow setting process means non hydraulic lime remains softer and more breathable. This means it is especially suitable for older, softer bricks.

Applying non hydraulic lime mortar

  • Carefully rake out the old mortar.
  • As a general rule for brickwork, joints should be cut out to a depth of twice the height of the joint.
  • Clean out the joint and ensure it is well dampened down.
  • Use a pointing tool to firmly pack the mortar into the joint. The mortar should be stiff and not sloppy. Avoid getting any mortar on the brickwork.
  • Keep the mortar moist as it is drying by spraying with water.
  • Once the mortar is still firm, finish the joint by beating the wall with a stiff brush.

Lime putty mortar has a long shelf life if kept within the airtight containers. However, if left for a longer period of time, it may have settled and will simply require knocking up.

It is important that there is no risk of frost when applying non hydraulic lime mortars. Ice crystals forming within the lime mortar will greatly increase the time it will take the carbonisation process to take place. Using HESSIAN as an insulation barrier will protect from frost action and is vital during the winter months.
